A Legend Buried Twice
THE STORY
In 1665, the pirate hunter Henry Morgan came for David Marteen’s Spanish fortune. Marteen refused to hand it over. He turned his ship north instead, vanished up the Farmington River, and buried a treasure so vast he trusted only the earth to keep it.
The earth kept it for 114 years.
Then, in 1779, a prisoner named Beary Smith clawed his way out of Newgate, Connecticut’s most feared colonial prison, and went digging in the dark along Salmon Brook for stolen war gold. What his shovel struck instead was Marteen’s legend. Men betrayed each other for it. Men died for it. Smith alone walked away, and before he vanished forever, he buried the fortune a second time, in a place so unthinkable that 250 years of treasure hunters, historians, and tourists have walked right past it.
His diary survived. And it tells exactly where to look.
